“Wicked” is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, a revisionist take on the Land of Oz from before Dorothy’s arrival. The story tells the story of Elphaba, a young girl born with emerald-green skin who is discriminated against for her difference. She meets Glinda the Good Witch, who teaches her how to be proud of her uniqueness and to embrace her fate. Years later, Elphaba becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the West, hated by many but still striving to do what’s right.
